A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death of an 11-year-old girl whose body was found in the home of a relative in Paarl, Western Cape police said on Wednesday. Shamonique Claasen was found under a bed on Monday evening, Captain FC van Wyk said.

Her mother Magdeline Claasen reported her missing at the Paarl East police station on Sunday.

Shamonique's cousin Elaine Williams told IOL the family and neighbours launched a desperate search for the young girl on Saturday when her mother could not find her.

On Sunday, which would have been Shamonique’s 11th birthday, family and friends used Dal Weide Primary School, where she was a Grade 5 learner, as a base for the search.

“The police assisted with the search, along with neighbours and teachers from her school, handing out pamphlets, and I used Facebook to reach more people,” a distraught Elaine told the outlet.

But then a family member noticed a strange smell coming from Shamonique's uncle's Groenheuwel home. Shamonique and her parents lived in a Wendy house on the same premises.

“They found her body, under a bed, wrapped in a black bag, tied with wire,” Elaine said.

Yesterday Shamonique's mother Magdeline and father Shawn Lewis went to identify their daughter's body on Tuesday. They were too distraught to speak, EWN reports.

The school has since arranged for counselling for learners, principal Chris Bam said.

A 23-year-old suspect was taken in for questioning.
