Grisham, best known for his legal thrillers, has had a lifelong passion for baseball – he coaches his son’s teams and helped fund the building of pitches in Virginia and Mississippi.

He’s touched on the sport in a previous novel, A Painted House, but in Calico Joe he goes much further – this time baseball dominates the book from beginning to end.

In the summer of 1973 young Joe Castle of Calico Rock, Arkansas, was hailed as the greatest baseball rookie ever.

He became the idol of every fan in America, including Paul Tracey, the young son of Warren Tracey, a second-rate pitcher for the New York Mets. Paul was in the stands the day his dad faced Joe and saw him throwing the ball that ended the boy wonder’s career.

Thirty years later as his father is dying of cancer, Paul embarks on a journey of redemption. If you enjoy baseball you’ll love Calico Joe. If not rather give it a miss.
