Book: David Nicholls - One Day

15 October 2010

Students Emma and Dexter meet in Edinburgh on 15 July 1988 on the eve of their graduation and despite their differences they click.

She’s a lefty who wants to change the world, he’s a vain, aimless posh boy without a political bone in his body.

The next day they go their separate ways but they stay in touch and we meet them every year on 15 July as they navigate their way through adulthood.

He becomes a coke-fuelled C-list TV presenter while she languishes in a dead-end waitressing job, dabbles in amateur dramatics and tries her hand at writing.

They meet and mate with others but like touchstones always return to each other. Will they ever get together?

This hilarious, perceptive and moving page-turner is about to get the Hollywood treatment but I urge you to read the book before you see the movie.

You’ll laugh and cry and you won’t be disappointed.
