Book: Emma Donoghue - Room

This novel is narrated by Jack, a five-year-old boy who has lived his entire life in a tiny room with his mother, who was kidnapped seven years previously by an evil man.

She and Jack refer to their captor as Old Nick. When he visits Jack hides in the wardrobe and listens to the bedsprings creaking.

Based on the Josef Fritzl case, this book is both shocking and profoundly moving as it examines a woman’s nightmare abduction and the lengths to which she’s willing to go to protect her son.

Although Room runs the risk of becoming voyeuristic and depressing it never does.

Beautifully written, it must surely rank as one of the most compelling and memorable releases of the year. Read it.
