If you enjoy everything about food – shopping for it, cooking it, eating it and ordering in restaurants - you’ll love this book by New York chef and restaurant owner Gabrielle Hamilton, subtitled The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef.

We see how her passion for food began in her French mother’s kitchen and in the backyard of their home in Pennsylvania where she would help her artist father prepare whole roast lambs for dinner parties.

However her fond memories are soon dashed when as a teen she experiences the nasty dissolution of her parents’ marriage.

She goes to New York and later Europe, lying about her age to get work in restaurant kitchens. Her career grows in the food industry; she opens her own restaurant while balancing her career with her unconventional marriage to an Italian man.

This well-written novel shows how food not only feeds the body but also enriches the spirit.
