A thriller in the Deon Meyer style, it builds the tension steadily courtesy of Van der Merwe’s taut prose.

Rated: 3/5

Van der Merwe revisits Paul du Toit, a former Special Forces operative whom fans got to know in his previous offerings, No Man’s Land and Shark. After years spent living in London with his Czech girlfriend, Monica, Paul is still unable to fully embrace his adopted country or commit to his relationship. He inhabits a strange twilight world – until Monica falls pregnant and, rather than face the fact, he travels back to SA on one last mission.

Hired by a rich British businessman to protect his teenage daughter, Chloe, while on holiday, he arrives in Cape Town just after the 2010 Soccer World Cup to find the country much changed – but also eerily similar. It’s only when Chloe is kidnapped that he begins to realise a completely different set of puppet masters is now controlling the Rainbow Nation, and Chloe isn’t the only one whose life is in danger.

Shadow offers an insightful look at just how much SA has metamorphosed while the hordes of ex-pats living overseas weren’t looking. A thriller in the Deon Meyer style, it builds the tension steadily courtesy of Van der Merwe’s taut prose.
