A child dies in a river in picturesque Dovedale in the Peak District.

For Detective Constable Ben Cooper, who tries but fails to save her, it’s a traumatic start to a dark journey that will take him deep into the tangled lives of her family – and into places both real and virtual where people are seldom who they pretend to be.

Meanwhile his colleague Detective Sergeant Diane Fry is on a journey of her own – back to her roots in the inner-city streets of Birmingham, investigating a brutal gang-rape case that went cold years earlier.

Booth describes the brooding settings of his plots so well they almost become characters in their own right. It’s not for nothing The Guardian calls him “a modern master of rural noir”.

This is the 10th installment in the Ben Cooper and Diane Fry series but you needn’t have read any of the others to be able to follow the action.
