Boost your body image

Moms know that kids are like sponges, absorbing everything we say and do. Therefore, your attitude towards your body and health also affects the way your children think towards these things. Here are our top tips for improving your body image if you, like most women, dislike some of the things you see in the mirror.

Are you being realistic?

Do you constantly stare and poke at those little bumps on your arm, the spots on your face, the dimples on your rear and the stubborn belly flab that just won’t seem to go away? If you do, you’re probably victim to the unrealistic social and cultural ideals about women’s bodies that have us all feeling like we don’t quite measure up.

But if you begin to stop comparing yourself to others’ definitions of beauty, you’ll find that there’s much to be grateful for . . . cultivate a healthy body image and a more rewarding life by following these top tips:

1.       Change your perception

Perception is reality. Change your thoughts. Yes, stop all the negative, self-disparaging remarks. It does you no good and will put you in dark places where nobody will see you. Let there be light ? the way out of the darkness is changing your train of thoughts. Start with emphasising what you like and work from that. Focus on the key areas of your body that you like or accept. Not only will your perception change but your body image will be morphed into something more positive. This new-found body-confidence will exude from you!

2.       Stop looking for attention

Selfies, constantly updating your profile pic on social media platforms and asking if you look good in the new skirt you bought in a smaller size isn’t going to make you feel better!

Seeking attention and then getting it isn’t the way to feel good. Ooze self-assurance and the compliments will come in due time; there’s nothing better than an unexpected vote of confidence.

3.       Say it out loud

Don’t have a contest with your girlfriends about who’s the fattest. Guilty of the following? You: “OMG, I look so fat in this jeans!” Friend: “Are you crazy? You’re not the fat one; have you SEEN my thighs!” Come on, there are better things to talk about that can actually result in you walking away from a conversation feeling great about yourself. Let go of the pity party and instead encourage the art of saying out loud what you love about yourselves and each other. Example: “My butt looks great in these jeans!” Or create a mantra that you can chant whenever you look in the mirror or apply lotion to your body, something like: “I am beautiful because I am me, and my outer beauty is a result of my inner strength.”

4.       Grab the Post-its

It might take a while to change your mindset, so to help grab some Post-its and write words of motivation for yourself. Jot down your favourite quotes about self-love and body image, the best compliments you’ve received and what you love about your body and stick them around your mirror. Being surrounded by all the positive statements will help you to combat the negative ones floating around your head.

5.       Treat yourself as you would a friend

When you speak to yourself take a step back to analyse the words. Would you say that to your best friend? Would you speak to him/her in that manner? Speak to yourself with respect and hold yourself up to a better standard.
