An 11-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of three-year-old Elijah Walker after the toddler was found dead in the front seat of a car with the older boy.

The 11-year-old from Detroit in the US, whose name cannot be revealed because of his age, was visiting his father’s home when he allegedly took his hand gun out of the bedroom cupboard.

'I cannot remember a time where we have charged someone so young with taking a life'

The boy then went to play in a car parked behind the home -- and little Elijah came out to play with him soon after. Elijah’s aunt saw realised that he had run out and ran into the garden to find him but she was too late.

She heard gunshots and found Elijah dead in the front seat of the car with a gunshot wound to the face. It's unclear what happened while both boys were inside the car, but it seems the 11-year-old was playing with the gun and fired it accidentally.

The 11-year-old now faces charges of manslaughter and illegal firearm discharge. "I cannot remember a time where we have charged someone so young with taking a life,” prosecutor in the case, Kym Worthy, said in a news release. “Very unfortunately and very tragically, the alleged facts in this case demanded it."

Elijah’s family is devastated at the loss of what they described as “a happy baby” who though born prematurely, survived without major complications. According to close relative Tameka Cash, “Everybody is hurt. It’s just sad. It’s tragic.”
