A new record was set for the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction when a painting by Irish-born painter Francis Bacon sold for a staggering $142, 4 million (R1, 4 billion) yesterday.

The 1969 three-panel painting called Three Studies of Lucian Freud was sold at Christie’s in New York, beating the previous auction record of $119, 9 million (R 1, 1 billion) set by Norwegian painter Edvard Munch’s The Scream.

The painting shows Bacon’s friend and fellow artist Lucian Freud on a chair from different views – one from each side and one face on. According to Christie’s the painting was a “true masterpiece that marks Bacon and Freud's relationship” and their “creative and emotional kinship”.

The auction house wouldn’t reveal the identity of the successful buyer.
