Car of the year finalists announced

The 2014 SA Car of the Year finalists have been revealed at the 2013 Johannesburg motor show.

We’re glad we’re not judges at the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ). How do you choose the car of the year from the illustrious list announced on at the Johannesburg International Motor Show? The finalists’ announcement follows a vote cast by a 30-member jury, elected by their peers, on the 40 semifinalists. The nine finalists (photos below) for the 2014 WesBank Car of the Year competition are:

  3. Lexus IS 350 F-Sport
  4. Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG
  5. Peugeot 208 GTI
  6. Porsche Cayman S

  9. Volvo V40 D3 Geartronic Excel
The SAGMJ will have a two-day evaluation session in January 2014 to determine the winner, which will be announced in February 2014. Interesting facts about SA Car of the Year:
  • BMW has won the SA Car of the Year title a record six times (1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2011).
  • Audi, Opel and Volkswagen have all won the SA Car of the Year title three times each, with Honda, Renault and Toyota taking the crown twice.
  • Alfa Romeo, Ford, Hyundai, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Volvo have won the title once each.
