At 71 Bob Dylan has a voice that’s so croaky it’s been compared to a lawnmower but he uses it to almighty effect here to give his confoundingly intriguing lyrics an in-your-face quality full of youthful attitude and vigour. There’s reflection, sadness and regret but also anger, wit and lust.

The crack musicians keep the music wonderfully loose-but-tight, whether it’s muscular Chicago blues (Early Roman Kings), wicked Western swing (Duquesne Whistle) or lilting Irish balladry (the title track). .
