Thanks to Siri, the virtual voice on Apple’s iPhone, a teenage boy from Tennessee in America will live to see another day.

Sam Ray (18) says the voice recognition software on his iPhone called for help after he was pinned beneath a truck.
'I said, ‘Call 911’ and that was all it said'

Sam told local news sources he was carrying out repairs underneath a truck, when the truck slipped off the jack and pinned him under a weight of more than 2 000 kg of metal.

Passersby couldn’t hear or see Sam stuck under the truck – and he couldn’t wriggle free to get to his phone, which was in his pants pocket.

“I said, ‘Call 911’ and that was all it said,” Sam says.

Christina Lee, who received the emergency call, initially thought Sam had phoned her by mistake – until she heard his shout for help.

By means of his cellphone Christina could determine Sam’s position and immediately sent a rescue team to help him.

They freed him about 40 minutes after the truck had trapped him.

Sam suffered quite a few injuries, including a broken rib, a bruised kidney, concussion and various cuts.

He’s grateful to be alive. “I guess I’m stuck with an iPhone for the rest of my life. I owe them that,” he said.
