Charlene loves the in-laws

In just a few weeks our golden-haired girl from Benoni will become a member of one of the most colourful royal families in Europe and sister-in-law to two women who’ve kept the world enthralled for decades with their scandals and tragedies.

And by all accounts Princess Caroline and younger sister Princess Stephanie of Monaco are looking forward to welcoming Charlene Wittstock into the fold.

“Charlene enjoys very good relations with my sister and me,” Stephanie said recently. “We couldn’t dream of a better sister-in-law.”

A lot is riding on the shoulders of the former champion swimmer – shoulders that have been looking increasingly bony as the 2 July wedding draws near.

The media in Monaco are very different to the media in England, which feasted on every kilo Prince William’s wife, Kate, shed in the run-up to her nuptials, and Charlene is being left largely alone as she prepares for her big day.

But there is no doubt she is several kilos lighter than she was a few months ago as pre-wedding nerves take their toll.

The 33-year-old – who is 20 years younger than husband-to-be Prince Albert – is taking care of all the wedding arrangements, Stephanie says.

“I’m not involved at all but that’s okay. I’m very happy for them. Like all little sisters I want to see my brother happy. This wedding is a demonstration of their love and happiness.”

Charlene has nothing but praise and respect for the Monaco princesses.

“They’re both great women who have achieved much in their lives,” she said on German TV recently. “They’ve always been incredibly supportive and kind.”
