Charlize Theron says she's "constantly trying to win back" South Africa's love.

But the Benoni-born beauty's certainly not doing herself any favours with her latest comments. “I love my country," the 40-year-old Oscar winner told British magazine GQ, "And it’s very hard for South Africans to believe that, because I left and speak in an American accent."

"I have a very, very strong connection to my country and to its people. It’s the mother that might have abandoned me, in a weird way, but not all the way. I’m not having a pity party, but I’m constantly trying to win its love back.” Read more: Sean Penn doing ‘great’ after Charlize split In the feature, for which she posed for a series of steamy snaps, Charlize also revealed how tough it is to get roles because of how she looks.

"Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that’s the end of the story ,” the mother of one said.

“How many roles are out there for the gorgeous, f***ing, gown-wearing eight-foot model? When meaty roles come through, I’ve been in the room and pretty people get turned away first."

She’s never been afraid to make herself “ugly” for a role. In fact it was her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the film Monster, for which she gained more than 10 kg, that won her an Oscar 12 years ago. And last year she cut off all her hair for the movie Mad Max: Fury Road.

Charlize says there’s an unrealistic standard for how women over 40 are supposed to look. This is why she’s now speaking out against “outdated standards where ageism is concerned”.

“It would be a lie to say there is less worry for women as they get older than there is for men. We live in a society where women wilt and men age like fine wine. And, for a long time, women accepted it. We were waiting for society to change, but now we’re taking leadership.”
