Chery's J1 hatchback offers a combination of style, practicality and affordability the manufacturer believes will prove to be a winning combination.

Prices for the two-model range – the J1 1.3 TE and the top-of-the-line J1 1.3TX – start at a class-leading R109 900. Both are equipped with power steering, air conditioning, alloy wheels and critical safety features such as dual airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake distribution.

Both models are powered by a new four-cylinder, fuel-injected 1,3-litre Acteco petrol engine, developed by Chery to compete with rival manufacturers in terms of power and fuel economy.

It provides 61 kW of power at 6 000 rpm and 114 Nm of torque between 3 800 and 4 500 rpm, while ensuring average fuel consumption of just 6,7 litres/100 km.

To make the most of the engine’s capabilities the front-wheel-driven J1s are equipped with a five-speed manual transmission.

Large angel-eye headlamps light the road at night and safety is bolstered by side-impact protection bars and a high-mounted brake light.

Manual air conditioning keeps driver and passengers cool in summer and unaware of the chill in winter. A CD-player audio system with USB port is standard on both models.

Power steering makes city driving a breeze and a turning radius of 4,75 m ensures effortless parking in even the tightest spaces.

The J1 range is equipped with central locking by remote with the TX having the added ease of convenience locking along with park distance control.

To further enhance comfort all the seats can be manually adjusted and the steering column’s rake can be set by the driver. In addition the TX model has front and rear electric windows and electric mirrors.

The Chery J1 range carries a three-year/100 000km warranty. Service intervals are 15 000 km and both models have a three-year/75 000 km service plan.
