He's not quite the god of thunder in his latest movie. Thor actor Chris Hemsworth is almost unrecognisable, having lost a shocking amount of weight for his latest film, In The Heart Of The Sea.

Just tried a new diet/training program called "Lost At Sea". Wouldn't recommend it.. #IntheHeartoftheSea

"Just tried a new diet/training program called "Lost At Sea." Wouldn't recommend it," Chris (32) captioned the Instagram snap, which sees him sporting a dishevelled beard and wild hair.

He'd already lost all of his Thor bulk, but Chris had to limit his daily intake to about 500 calories (2092 kilojoules) per day to slim down enough for the film.

The recommended daily allowance for an average male is between 2000 and 3000 calories (8368 and 12552 kilojoules).

"When you’re already starting off lean, its brutal to chew through that kind of weight," the actor told Entertainment Weekly. "Every pound feels like a kilogram."

The Moby Dick-inspired In The Heart Of The Sea tells the story of a whaling ship that’s crew was stranded after being destroyed by a whale.
