From the new Captain America instalment to Batman taking on Superman, here is a list of comic book movies scheduled for release this year.

Deadpool (February)

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), an ex-soldier with terminal cancer, undergoes an experimental process that leaves him with accelerated healing powers and an unstable mind. Most Marvel movies cater for the whole family, but Deadpool is rumoured to be R-rated, so leave the kids at home.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March)

Fearing what will happen if someone with superhuman powers is left to his own devices, Batman (Ben Affleck) travels to Metropolis to fight Superman (Henry Cavill). Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) also makes an appearance.

X-Men: Apocalypse (May)

Apocalypse, an ancient and powerful mutant, awakes after millennia of sleep. Modern society not being to his liking, he decides that the world should be “cleansed”. This forces estranged friends Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) to work together to avert Apocalypse.

Suicide Squad (August)

A government agency puts together a team of villains to do their dirty work for them, allowing them to deny any involvement if things go south. A number of DC villains make their appearance, including the Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), the Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) and Deadshot (Will Smith).

Gambit (October)

Very little is known about the movie’s plot, but Channing Tatum is going to star as Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit, a mutant who throws exploding cards. It’s set to be directed by Doug Liman, who helmed action hits like Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Ultimatum. Unfortunately, there is no trailer out yet.

Doctor Strange (November)

Fans of this Marvel magician will have to wait until the end of the year for their hero to make his appearance. The movie sees Dr Stephan Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a neurosurgeon, obtaining magical powers after setting out on a journey of self-discovery following a car accident that ruins his career. The trailer isn’t out yet.
