A new survey answers the question that keeps us busy around the braai – are men or women better drivers?

WHO are the better drivers – women or men? For years both genders have had their theories but now a new local survey has provided a conclusive answer: it’s women. And what’s more they’re actually streets ahead of men – the study found the average female’s performance on the road is 20% better than the typical male driver’s.

For more than a year Discovery Insure monitored the driving behaviour of more than 11 000 clients in South Africa’s main metropolitan areas via a special tracking device fitted in their cars and it released the results this week.

Drivers were assessed according to their actions on the roa, which included harsh braking, sharp cornering, acceleration, speeding, accidents and night driving.

Using the information Discovery has on its clients it’s possible to get a picture of what the perfect driver would look like: It would be a woman who lives in Port Elizabeth, is a non-smoker and drives a Hyundai. Look out for her when you’re next on the road – and give her a friendly wave!

And if you spot a guy in an Audi with Durban registration plates who smokes, give him wide berth. According to the survey, people who fit this profile are among South Africa’s worst drivers. Here are some of the survey results: Driver performance ranked according to city

  1. Port Elizabeth
  2. Cape Town
  3. Johannesburg
  4. Pretoria
  5. Durban
