Zhang Qi (24) has been living in a squalid, derelict house and "treated like an animal" since she was 19. She locked away by her parents after they forced her to break up with her boyfriend.

A neighbour eventually blew the whistle on the couple's cruelty, after having visited Zhang in secret for years. “On my latest visit though I saw her lying on a pile of straw with a couple of blankets and some food around her and I just decided enough was enough," Chow Jen. Jen said the girl's parents were "powerful people"  in the village of Jingang in central China’s Hubei province, and it was common knowledge that they had locked their daughter away in the ramshackle property.

Her parents are said to have told other residents that Zhang was mentally unstable, and had to be locked away for her own good.

“Whether what they say about her having mental problems is true or not, she is being treated like an animal here," Jen told media.

"I’m sick of it so I contacted the police, and then posted the images online.”
