A true love story that closely resembled the hit movie The Notebook came to an end earlier this month when a couple married for 73 years died minutes apart.

William (93) and Lillian (89) Wilson, from Lexington, Kentucky, met in High School and fell in love as World War II broke out.

“He enlisted, and then they ran off, decided to get married,” said Doug Wilson, the couple’s son.

He received a phone call from the Thomas Hood Veterans Center in the middle of the night on 7 April -- his father had passed away. Minutes later, he received a call from retirement community Richmond Place, telling him that his mother had also died. Both suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

“I told the nurse, you’re not going to believe this, but my father just passed away a couple minutes ago,” Doug told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

“She said that’s like, ‘The Notebook’, the movie, that they went together. It shocked me, and I just stayed numb for a while, not knowing what to do.”

After a while, Doug realised how lucky he was to witness his parents’ enduring love story.

"They were a really loved couple. Wherever they went, they made lots of friends."
