A 12-year-old girl from the state of Indiana in the US reportedly killed  her stepmother because a “laughing clown” had told her to do it.

The girl also set the family’s flat on fire before murdering her stepmom, Maria Torres.

According to court documents the girl had begged her dad months earlier for help. She’d developed an alter ego and started hearing voices. One of the voices belonged to “Laughing Jack”.

“Laughing Jack” is a character in a scary story that appeared on a blog. It’s about a mother who discovers her five-year-old son has a make-believe friend in the shape of a clown. At the end of the story the mother stabs her own child to death.

The 12-year-old is being held in a juvenile detention centre in Goshen, Indiana. No sharp objects are allowed near her. This means the kids in the centre now have to eat using “paper spoons”.

There are similarities between this tragic event and that of Slenderman, another fictitious character who’s believed to have influenced kids to commit various gruesome acts.

The best known of these is the case of Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, who in May 2014 stabbed a classmate 19 times and left her for dead in the forests of Waukesha, Wisconsin, in the US. Morgan and Anissa were both 12 years old at the time.
