Evangelical Christian magazine Christianity Today has issued an apology after running a bizarre personal ad — written by a father from Illinois in the US looking for beaus for his daughter.

Advertising for a son-in-law, Stephen Stewart wrote he was a Chicagoland church elder (and a CFO with an MBA) seeking a spouse for his daughter, Rachel.

“Her: godly, gorgeous, athletic, educated, careered, humorous, travelled, bilingual, 26-year-old virgin”

“You: unworthy, though becoming less so daily,” he added.

Published in the jobs section of the March issue of the magazine, the “creepy”, “demeaning” ad has since caused a furore and the editor has issued an apology.

“We want everything in our magazine to reflect beautiful orthodoxy, and this ad did not,” the editor in chief, Mark Galli, said.

“We have taken a hard look at our ad review process, made some changes, and we can assure our readers that no ad like this will appear again.”

The Daily Beast reports that Rachel had no idea her father had posted the ad in Christianity Today, until people started leaving comments on her blog – which her father had posted in the ad. Rachel's blog has since been deleted.

She wrote that she was “impressed, but not surprised,” in the now-deleted post.

“At least it’s appropriate they placed it in the Employment Opportunities section because putting up with this father-in-law's shenanigans is a full time job,” she wrote, “without any paid vacation.”

“I’m just nervous if this doesn’t work out, next I’ll find my face plastered on a billboard.”

“Oh gosh, now I’m giving him ideas.”

And it’s not the first time Stephan has interfered in his daughter’s love life.

In a Valentine’s Day blog post, Rachel blogged about her father’s efforts to subtly bribe a potential suitor he referred to as “El Grande” or “The Big One.”
