The photo of Sarah holding their newborn son is the only photo he'll ever have of them together.

For this couple, 9 May was one of the happiest days of their lives.

It was the day that 29-year-old Sarah Bertrand gave birth to the couple's first child, a little boy they named Julian Charles.

But just 24 hours after giving birth, Sarah died in her hospital room as her fiance, Jean Luc Montou (24) held their newborn son.

Jean Luc shared photos to Facebook -- the sort of photos every parent has and treasures of the precious first moments of a mother holding her newborn child -- with a caption that would bring you to tears.

"Not sure if people who follow my page know about my situation," he wrote. "My son, Julian Charles Montou was born on May 9th, but Sarah, his mom and my fiance, died just over 24 hours later.

"I've been struggling with the grieving and mourning as well as taking care of my infant son."

The photo of Sarah holding their son is the first and only picture he will ever have of them together.

The couple had been waiting to go home to announce the birth but instead Jean Luc was faced with the task of telling their loved ones she had died and penned a heartbreaking post to break the news.

"Still doesn't even feel real," he wrote.

"I've never felt such brutal, such raw, anguish. You can be fine for hours, even thinking about it, and then it slams you like a hammer."

According to Jean Luc, who has a daughter, Jane, from a previous relationship, doctors suspect the cause of death was an amniotic embolism.

This is an extremely rare childbirth complication that causes heart and lung collapse and internal bleeding. He told The Mirror that Sarah had complained of a headeace before she suddely died.

"I remember thinking it would be OK because we were in a hospital - and the staff tried so hard to help her - but I knew it was serious when they started doing compressions and began using the defibrillator."

The couple were making plans to marry after Julian's birth.

Now, once again a single parent, Jean Luc is staying with family members until he can decide what their next steps will be. He says although it is hard, his daughter and son keep him going.

Jean says as Julian grows older, he will make sure that he knows his mother loved him deeply.

"Julian was her purpose, I'll tell him that he's not just her son, he's her legacy."

He also told TODAY news that his Facebook post was only intended to be an update for those close to his family but it brings him great joy to know that people around the world have now heard their story.
