Darren Scott’s boy on the home stretch

When adorable Mark Scott turns two in November he’ll put months of gruelling chemotherapy behind him

His arms and legs are painfully thin and the copper curls his mom loved to play with are gone. For three weeks every month the toddler undergoes chemo and he’s been in hospital more times than his parents care to remember.

Yet despite everything little Mark Scott’s infectious smile and sunny nature haven’t changed and he plays, sings and chats his way through most days.

“We can’t get over the fact Markie is such a brave little boy,” says his dad, radio and TV personality Darren Scott.

His wife, Sarah-Kate, bounces their 21-month-old on her lap. “He’s taught us what it is to stay strong and positive,” she says.

Darren (48) and Sarah-Kate (29) have had a rough year – first Mark was diagnosed with kidney cancer, then it was discovered he had the congenital condition Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, a growth disorder.

But after six months of treatment the end of the ordeal is finally in sight.

“He has only three months of chemo left,” Sarah-Kate says. “The best of all is he’ll be finished with treatment before his second birthday so we’ll have two parties to celebrate.”
