A Durban trauma surgeon, Mike Faurie, successfully operated by the roadside on a man who’d been involved in an accident.

The accident took place last Saturday in Emgeni Road, in Durban. Three people were lightly injured and a 30-year-old man was critically hurt when a piece of metal pierced his abdomen. The man couldn’t be safely removed from the car while still impaled by the piece of metal.

Emergency personnel summoned the trauma surgeon, who arrived by helicopter. Mike (30) removed the piece of metal and emergency personnel could then cut the victim from the wreck. Mike qualified as a trauma surgeon less than a year ago.

He accompanied the patient to hospital in the helicopter. He says operating with limited equipment was a challenge.

The patient is recovering in the Albert Lithuli Central Hospital.
