THE boundaries between reality and madness are blurred in this gripping film about a ballerina, Nina (Portman), who tries to get in touch with her deepest, darkest emotions for a dance role.

She’s cast as the lead in a production of Swan Lake and, as tradition has it, must play the roles of both the white and black swan.

The director (Cassel) however isn’t happy with her portrayal of the magical black swan. And the harder she tries the more she loses her grip on reality.

Strange things start to happen in her head, all of which the director shows the viewer.

It’s as if she undergoes a metamorphosis and actually turns into a swan. And the pressure put on her by rival dancers, in particular Lily (Kunis), makes things worse.

It’s an incredible, disturbing movie experience with outstanding performances, especially by Portman who received an Oscar for her role.

Bonus: insightful making-of featurettes.
