This film is based on the inspirational true story of a woman’s quest of 18 years to free her brother from prison.

Kenny Waters (Rockwell), a regular guy with a mercurial temper, is arrested for murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1983. His sister, Betty Anne (Swank), is determined to prove his innocence.

While working part-time as a waitress and raising her two sons, Betty Anne manages to put herself through high school, university and, ultimately, law school. But that’s just the beginning – she still needs to find the evidence that will prove Kenny’s innocence.

Rockwell and Swank’s excellent performances makes this poorly directed movie more entertaining than it deserves. The supporting cast also pull their weight, notably Melissa Leo as a determined police officer and Juliette Lewis as a dodgy trailer-trash witness.

Although the film has little suspense it’s still engaging.

Bonus: featurette.
