Romantic comedy.

2011. 113 min.

With Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Josh Groban.

Director: Glenn Ficarra.

13L.

Rating: 3/5

This sprightly film with multiple plot strands that eventually merge tries to be more realistic than the average romcom but ends up giving in to audience expectations.

The focus is on Cal (Carell) whose wife (Moore) asks him for a divorce. His world collapses until he meets Jacob (Gosling), a smooth ladies’ man who tries to give him a new lease of life by teaching him to pick up women.

But Jacob’s charm doesn’t work on Hannah (Stone), a corporate go-getter patiently waiting for her mild-mannered boyfriend (Groban) to propose.

Carell is lovably pathetic and Stone is perfect as the girl lots of women would like to be: pretty, sassy and immune to the bad boy’s charms, which makes him fall for her.

Her scenes with Gosling sizzle and it’s wonderful to see him letting loose and not taking himself so seriously. A sweet, funny film with great actors but nothing you haven’t seen before.

Bonus: deleted scenes.
