13SV After 31 years of marriage Kay (MERYL STREEP) and Arnold (TOMMY LEE JONES) sleep apart and barely interact. After many failed attempts to spice things up, frustrated Kay signs them up for marriage counselling with Dr Feld (Steve Carell). Grumpy Arnold reluctantly agrees because despite his fear of intimacy he still loves his wife. This thoughtful, sweet film is refreshingly different from all the clichéd, fluffy romcoms that focus on ditzy 20-somethings falling in love for the first time. It takes a sometimes painfully honest, realistic look at an older couple who are stuck in a rut and offers no quick-fix answers. Jones and Streep offer a masterclass in nuanced acting and create rounded, flawed characters you really do want to see together, and Carell offers sympathetic support. The humour is dry and subtle but with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The film might make some viewers uncomfortable with its frank dialogue about older people’s sexuality but the moving story makes it a worthwhile watch. – SANDRA VISSER
