Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway make a charming dysfunctional couple in this romantic drama.

Set in the 1990s Jamie Randall is a rep for a pharmaceutical company who spends his days flirting cheerily and flogging antidepressants and later Viagra to doctors, while Maggie is a free-spirited artist who’s been diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s.

Their relationship begins as a one-afternoon stand which becomes a fling and, very reluctantly from Maggie’s side, gradually turns into a more serious relationship.

Director Edward Zwick is better known for epics (The Last Samurai, Glory, Blood Diamond) but here he delivers a film about a couple that’s refreshingly mature in its approach to relationships, love and sex (of which there’s plenty, sensitive viewers).

The film also takes a dig at the somewhat unscrupulous business practices of giant drug companies but that aspect is less successful than the moving story of Jamie and Maggie’s relationship.
