This haunting, creepy and thought-provoking film explores the back story to director Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece, Alien.

Rating: 3/5

2012. 124 min. 16LV.

Sci-fi thriller.

Set 30 years earlier but still far in the future the plot focuses on scientist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), who finds ancient cave paintings containing a map to a distant planet and is convinced this explains humankind’s origins.

A big corporation agrees to fund a mission, headed by executive Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), but nothing can prepare the crew for what they encounter on the planet.

Fans of the original film will find a lot to enjoy as there are many echoes in the plot, characters and look, but those seeking an action-packed blockbuster will be disappointed – this is an ambitious attempt to explore weighty themes such as belief, evolution and myth.

Although there are plot holes and Scott struggles to let it all make sense, its scope, impressive production design and compelling performances – especially from MICHAEL FASSBENDER as enigmatic android David – make it a cut above the rest.
