Robin Hood will never be the same, it seems, because director Ridley Scott’s interpretation of the heroic British outlaw is vastly different from other film versions.

It’s a prequel which shows how Robin became the medieval folk hero who robbed the rich to feed the poor. A 13th-century English soldier helps his king defeat France only to be stabbed in the back by his leader and declared a criminal.

Russell Crowe’s portrayal of a bitter, damaged Robin is realistic and believable and Cate Blanchettbrings Marion Loxley to life as a strong-willed woman ahead of her time with inspiring sensitivity.

There’s some of the humour found in other Robin Hood flicks in this epic of grand proportions.

Intense drama and bloody fighting set against a stunning backdrop of old England are a feast for the eyes and the well-developed plot will hook you until the credits roll.

Bonus: deleted scenes with commentary.
