TWO genetic scientists at a pharmaceutical company, Clive (Brody) and Elsa (Polley), experiment by splicing together the DNA of various animals to create hybrid creatures from which they hope to extract proteins for medical use.

When they suggest using human DNA in their experiments their bosses refuse – so the two do it in secret and create an animal/human hybrid.

This creature – a female they name Dren – grows, physically and mentally, at an advanced rate and soon Clive and Elsa have a sexy young “woman” (Chenéac) on their hands.

But she has a deadly stinger in her tail and a volatile personality and may change sex. Have they created an uncontrollable monster?

Splice may not be for everyone but if you’re interested in genetic engineering and the questions raised by experiments with DNA splicing – which are being carried out in laboratories around the world – this well-made and well-acted flick certainly is worth seeing.

Bonus: featurettes.
