In 140 AD a Roman centurion (Tatum) arrives in Britain to reclaim his family’s honour by finding the eagle standard of the ninth legion which was lost when his father and his men disappeared in the wilds of Scotland.

He saves the life of a Celtic slave (Bell) who agrees to lead him past Hadrian’s Wall to find the truth.

A fresh take on the Roman epic that doesn’t quite succeed, The Eagle is nevertheless an engaging adventure with solid performances and excellent battle scenes. The first half is riveting as Tatum and his men battle the Celts.

The buff hunk makes a convincing soldier and the military prowess on display shows why the Romans crushed other nations. Unfortunately the second half suffers in comparison as the two leads enter the unknown.

The vistas are breathtaking and Bell and Tatum’s interaction works well, but convenient coincidences make their quest seem too easy.

Bonus: alternate ending, deleted scenes, featurette, commentary.
