Based on a popular teen book series this mildly diverting action adventure’s only unique quality is that it’s set in Australia.

Tomboy teen Ellie (Stasey) invites a group of her classmates on a camping trip but when they return home to their small town they discover Australia has been invaded by an unnamed Asian country that wants to claim its vast resources.

Initially panicked, they gradually band together and start a guerrilla campaign against the invaders.

Ellie’s random selection of such a diverse group of kids feels contrived and the young actors struggle to convince in the scenes that establish their characters.

But once the invasion kicks in, the pace picks up and the well-executed action sequences pull you in.

The heroes sometimes make irritating mistakes but this makes sense because they’re ordinary teens, not soldiers, and you end up rooting for them.

Bonus: featurettes, director’s commentary.
