Desperate and homeless after a tragedy, veterinary student Jacob (Pattinson) hitches a ride on a circus train and soon finds himself in a love triangle with the circus’ star performer, Marlena (Witherspoon), and her husband, circus ringmaster and owner August (Waltz).

Thrown into the mix is another new addition to the big top – Rosie, an elephant everyone is relying on to become its new star attraction and save the floundering circus.

The film is a gorgeous, old-fashioned spectacle that vividly recreates the circus environment of the ’30s.

Waltz, as he did in Inglourious Basterds, steals the show as the charming but brutal August.

Pattinson and Witherspoon fare less well as the would-be lovers who have worryingly little chemistry for people prepared to risk everything to be together.

But the film is saved by Rosie, a magnificent creature whose story is more affecting than the love triangle.

Bonus: featurettes.
