This stylish prequel to the four other X-Men movies tells the back story of how Professor X, also known as Charles Xavier (McAvoy), and Magneto, also known as Erik Lehnsherr (Fassbender), came to oppose each other in their views of what mutants should be – friend or foe to humanity.

In 1962 mutant supremacist Sebastian Shaw (Bacon) plots to manipulate Russia and the US into nuclear war, in order to wipe out humanity and pave the way for mutants.

Charles works with the US government to stop him and helps teach young outcast mutants to use their powers for good.

His path crosses with Erik who wants revenge against Shaw for murdering his mother.

This is a very different kind of blockbuster. It’s intelligent and more concerned with characters than explosions, although the action sequences are thrilling.

It’s a clever blend of fiction and fact, and casting actors better known for their talent than just their good looks adds to the sense of class and quality.
