Charlize Theron gives such a nuanced performance you can’t take your eyes off her

Black comedy.

Mavis Gary (CHARLIZE THERON), an alcoholic, divorced writer of adolescent fiction, decides reuniting with her high school boyfriend, Buddy (Patrick Wilson), would give meaning to her empty existence. Never mind that he’s happily married and has a newborn baby.

The team behind Juno, director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody, create a brilliant, caustic comedy centred on the sort of selfish, mean-spirited character who’d usually be the villain in a mainstream film.

Cody’s biting script mines laughs from awkward situations and many uncomfortable scenes will make you squirm. Theron again shows she’s an excellent actress with this Oscar-standard performance.

Mavis is still the self-absorbed mean girl she was in high school and even though she’s irritating and pathetic Theron gives such a nuanced performance you can’t take your eyes off her. But the harsh tone might not be to everyone’s taste.
