The couple threatened to kill themselves if the marriage wasn’t accepted by both families.

A 71-year-old woman married the 16-year-old love of her life after the couple threatened with suicide if the marriage wasn’t accepted by both families. Selamat Riaydi and his elderly bride, only known as Rohaya, tied the knot in a traditional ceremony in Karangendah, Indonesia.

The couple, who have a 55-year age gap between the two of them, warned family members that if they couldn’t be together for the rest of their lives, they’d be together in death.

Their families obliged and the pair wed in the home of a community leader.

“They said they wanted to commit suicide because they were completely in love, so if one of them dies, then both must die,” Kuswoyo, the community leader, reportedly told local media. He had to grant special permission for the matrimony to take place.

The couple, who are Muslim, formed a nikah siri marriage – which is recognised by society but not the state.

By Indonesian law, men should be 19 before they can legally tie the knot. However, the law allows for a younger man to get married, if it’s within his ‘religious norms’.

It’s believed that the marriage wasn’t motivated by financial necessity, as both of them are from impoverished families.

According to Mail Online, his family paid hers a mere £11, 50 (R200).

After they were declared husband and wife, the groom dropped his face into his hands, amid cheers from the guests, while his bride quietly sat beside him.
