He’s not as well-known as Hollywood heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio or Tom Cruise, but Eddie Redmayne’s Oscar win will soon make him a household name.

At the 87th Academy Awards ceremony last night the 33-year-old Brit won the best actor award for his portrayal of physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

Here are five facts about the actor:

  • Eddie’s breakout Hollywood roles were when he starred alongside Michelle Williams in 2011’s My Week with Marilyn and when he played Marius in 2012’s Oscar-nominated film Les Misérables.

  • This isn’t his first best actor award. In 2010, a then 28-year-old Eddie won the Tony Award for best actor in a play for his role in Red. In January he also won the Golden Globe for the best actor in a motion picture drama for his role in The Theory of Everything.

  • Prince William was one of his classmates at the prestigious Eton College.

  • Eddie is colour-blind and his wife Hannah Bagshawe often helps picks out his clothes for him. The couple married in December last year. Hannah is a public relations executive in the financial industry.

  • He has four siblings, but he’s the only one who has gone into acting.
