On average, the 16 striking Generations cast members were making R55 000 each per month, MSSV producer Friedrich Stark revealed at a press conference this morning. The actors, including stars like Sophie Ndaba and Menzi Ngubane, were sacked after refusing to return to set amid wage and contract disputes. "Ladies and gentlemen we have given you the average. That is not peanuts. Interrogate these issues," Generations executive producer Mfundi Vundla added. Stark said that while filming, the cast were also given three meals a day and had access to an actor's lounge. "It goes too far when they say they want personal trainers and things like that," he said. "And bodyguards!" Vundla chimed in.

In an open letter to fans earlier this week, the Generations Actors Guild said they were paid "rates well below what is understood to be the industry norm." They also cited issues over royalties and their new contracts.

According to the SABC's Verona Duwarkah, the SABC currently pays "above the industry standards".

"There is only one other soapie that pays around the same as us," she said.

The production team will hold auditions to find a new cast. "Other great actors have approached me saying they want to come to Generations," said SABC CEO Hlaudi Motsoeneng. "People are waiting."

Deciding to fire the actors was a risk, Vundla said. "We are excited about the risk. When we come back, man! It's gonna be great."
