Catching up with Chris Dry.

Shortly before their departure to Dubai where they’re currently playing some members of the Springbok Sevens team spent their time playing models at a fashion shoot in Cape Town and we took the chance to catch up with Sevens star Chris Dry.

They were promoting the home leg of the World Sevens Series tournament which will be taking place in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on 7 and 8 December, the only tournament the Blitzbokke play on South African soil!

Favourite tournament on the Sevens Circuit? Hong Kong; the whole vibe and energy in the stadium is amazing. It’s always packed and just great to play there.

Best thing about playing Sevens? Seeing the world, and the speed of the game.

Worst thing about playing Sevens? Living out of a suitcase and being away from family.

How did you experience taking part in a fashion shoot like this? It’s good fun! We spend so much time on the field, where we’re not really worried about what we’re wearing and how we look, so it’s nice to dress up and do something different!

What difference does playing in front of your home crowd make? When you play on home soil, it’s just a different experience. To physically hear and see the people who are behind you gives you so much energy, especially when you’re tired.

What do you do to relax? I like to chill out . . .  I like to build things, like a table or something!

What’s your favourite sport besides Sevens? I love playing soccer. I started doing that before I played rugby so I’ll always love it.

If you weren’t playing Sevens . . . ? I see myself either in the building trade ? I studied construction ? or otherwise managing a retail business, furniture or equipment or something cool like that.

What do you contribute to the squad on and off the field? Off the field: my energy, my experience, helping the new guys coming in. On the field: what makes me valuable is probably my good work rate.

See Chris and the Blitzbokke play in Port Elizabeth on 7 and 8 December. The action on the field will only be part of the fun! The weekend also includes great entertainment, such as 1st Project, Jeremy Loops and Friends, and Crazy White Boy. Get your tickets:

The Springboks Sevens team will be at a signing session on Wednesday 4 December from 2 pm to 3 pm at the Walmer Park shopping centre (Woolworths court) in Port Elizabeth.
