A 13-year-old girl was shot in the face when rival gangs opened fire in Bonteheuwel on Thursday afternoon.

Bonteheuwel Joint Peace Forum chairperson Judy Kennedy said the girl had been walking in Swartysterhout Street when she was hit by a stray bullet.

“The shots were flying as people were making their way home from work,” Kennedy said.

“The child was rushed to hospital for treatment, and she is understood to be out of danger. The bullet has been removed safely.”

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said the circumstances around the shooting were being investigated.

“No one has been arrested as yet,” he said.

Kennedy said the community was left despondent when even innocent children were not safe on the streets.

“While I am grateful the extent of the violence has not reached the levels experienced during last year’s bloody gang war, it should not escalate to that degree ever again,” she insisted.

A number of sporadic shootings and gang violence incidents have been reported over recent weeks in the gang-ridden community.

Kennedy argued that immediate action was needed from the authorities.

“We need the police on the ground. All the talk must be put aside so that we can see results. The people deserve to be safe.”
