Golf GTI tested

First the good: The GTI continues to carry the range’s flag for slab-solid build and concrete ride quality the Golf 6 has become known for.

And the bad: It’s as expensive as a base model Mercedes C-Class, it has only eight more kilowatts of power than the Golf 5 it replaces, it’s not much faster either and looks-wise it’s too understated for a flagship.

It’s as if VW is hell-bent on moving away from affordable hot hatches and into the realm of the rich. So the GTI 6 moves the game on but not up.

The hotter 200 kW Golf R coming next year will banish the once-respected GTI badge to mediocrity – and it can’t happen soon enough. - Braam Peens
