She’s 72, he’s 34 – but the flames of passion still burn after 14 years together

She doesn’t like loud thumping music, preferring instead to hum along to Mary Hopkin’s golden oldy, Those Were the Days.

That’s why the TV set in Susan and Pieter Peens’ home in Lampiesbaai, St Helena, on the West Coast is always tuned to a music channel that plays songs from the ’60s.

He, on the other hand, likes Afrikaans music with a beat. “But old music is also lekker. We karaoke right here,” Pieter says.

It’s “babe” this and “babe” that on the couch where the two lovebirds sit close together, frequently kissing and hugging.

He was christened Pieter but she prefers Peter – finish and klaar. “It’s nicer,’’ says the woman with the curly blonde hair, giving her husband an adoring look.

And he’s okay with Peter – because after being together for 14 years, seven of them married, he and his wife are totally in tune.

Nor does it faze them that he’s 34 and she’s 72, with six children, nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

This is true love – and to hell with the rest. “And please, don’t call me tannie,’’ she says firmly. “Just Susan, thank you.”
