A plucky little kitten clung to the undercarriage of a bakkie for nearly 8km – stuck inside a hole between the engine block and the sump.

Now named Lucky, the gutsy feline survived the ordeal late last month, and was discovered inside the engine compartment of the bakkie when the driver finally parked at a shopping centre in Empangeni. It is believed that kitty's size was also its saving grace, as it trawled just above the tarmac.
'This little kitty was found stuck inside a small hole in the plate underneath the oil sump of the bakkie'

Empangeni SPCA spokesperson Janine Quaite said the frantic meows from the trapped kitten were heard by another shopper.

“This little kitty was found stuck inside a small hole in the plate underneath the oil sump of the bakkie,” she said.

“The driver of the bakkie wasn’t aware of him stuck in there and drove all the way from Ngwelezane to the Empangeni city centre.”

Stressed and afraid, the kitten had to be sedated by SPCA inspectors before he could be manipulated out of the engine compartment.

Once freed, he was taken back to the kennels where he was lucky to find a foster mother.

“We had a ginger cat with four kittens of her own and she immediately adopted him as part of her litter.”

“He was lucky to escape with only a small roasty on his nose and two tiny cuts just behind his front legs on his upper torso,” Quaite said.
