Chinese carmaker GWM has spruced up its popular H5 SUV.

The H5 enters the 2014 model year with numerous refinements. Externally it can be told apart by a new chrome strip above the lower front air dam as well as by LED tail-lights and a tailgate spoiler.

On the inside the GWM gets piano black and chrome inlays, redesigned column stalks and a new rev counter that indicates optimal engine speed.

Standard features across the board include climate control, leather seats, automatic headlights and an infotainment system that incorporates a reverse camera and an MP3/USB/aux audio system. Diesel models add an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, instantaneous fuel consumption indicator, tyre pressure monitoring and an airbag disable function. Furthermore, cruise control is fitted to automatic diesel H5s.

On the safety front, all H5s feature dual airbags and ABS brakes.

GWM didn’t change the engine line-up and the H5 is available with the same two engine options. The normally aspirated 2,4-litre petrol option that pushes 100 kW and 200 Nm and the 2,0-litre turbodiesel engine develops 110 kW and 310 Nm from 1 800 r/min. The petrol engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, while the diesel can be had with either a six-speed manual or five-speed autobox. The H5 is an affordable alternative to competitors such as the Toyota Fortuner, Nissan Pathfinder and Chevrolet Trailblazer – especially if you consider that all but one of the H5 models is priced below R300 000. It also comes with a three-year/100 000-km warranty and two-year roadside assistance package. PRICES
