Gwyneth Paltrow believes criticism says the most about the person uttering it.

The 42-year-old actress has been on the receiving end of many harsh comments over the years, with her slim figure and sensible eating habits making her an easy target. Some have accused her of being too worthy, but Gwyneth believes such remarks are really just a reflection on the person making them. "I think that when anybody criticises anyone it really is revealing more about where they are in time and space, as opposed to where you are in time and space," she said at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit. "And I think generally we tend to, you know, lash out if you know what I mean. It is usually a reflection of something else and so at this time in my life I don't take it personally. I see it as a projection. Sometimes I learn good things from criticism."

The blonde star's comments came after she was asked about remarks American businesswoman Martha Stewart made. The writer-and-TV personality is known as something of a lifestyle guru and recently gave some harsh opinions about Gwyneth's own foray into the arena with her website Goop.

"She just needs to be quiet, she's a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn't be trying to be Martha Stewart," Martha stated.

While that would be enough to cow some people, Gwyneth has taken it in her stride. She joked it's nothing she hasn't heard before and can even find some positives in the remarks.

"No one has ever said anything bad about me before, so I'm shocked and devastated. I'll try to recover," she deadpanned.

"You know if I'm really honest, I'm so psyched that she sees us as competition. I'm so psyched I really am."

Gwyneth uses Goop to give people lifestyle advice, pumping it full of diet tips, recipes and ideas of things to buy for the home. She also used it to announce her split, or "conscious upcoupling" as she called it, from her Coldplay star husband Chris Martin earlier this year and last week told readers about her recent use of a psychic.

"Weird as it may sound considering our New Age leanings, not one of us freaks over at Goop HQ had ever had a psychic reading," she wrote.

"But since we're on an unquenchable quest to experience every type of modality to help us heal, expand, and deepen our understanding of all life's mysteries, when we heard tell of an exceptionally gifted LA-based intuitive, Jill Willard, we had to talk to her - and talk to her some more."
