William Morse, a postman from Kentucky, has been jailed for six months after he was caught hiding undelivered letters in his dead mother's basement and storage unit.

And we thought our mail service was bad! A postman has been jailed after he hid 45 000 undelivered letters in his dead mother's basement and storage unit.

William Morse, from Dawson Springs, Kentucky, has been locked up for six months and given a further six months home detention after he was caught stashing the post away in order to make his rounds shorter.

Captain Craig Patterson told USA Today: "He wanted to speed up his route."

William's crime was exposed when the owner of the storage facility noticed that there was the US postal logo on a number of the crates hidden in the lock-up.

The 34-year-old man has also been ordered to pay nearly $15,000 in compensation to people affected by his crime.

William's lawyer claimed the man was going through a divorce at the time and had to pick his children up from school, so he stored the mail he was unable to deliver.
